About this tool
What is the Image Converter?
The Image Converter changes an image from one file format to another — entirely in your browser. Upload a JPEG, PNG, WebP, BMP, or GIF, choose an output format, and download the converted file in seconds. No software to install, no files sent to a server.
Supported Formats
JPEG — The most widely used format for photographs. Uses lossy compression to produce small files. Does not support transparency — any transparent areas in the source image are filled with white on conversion.
PNG — A lossless format that preserves full image quality and supports transparency. Larger file sizes than JPEG for photographic content, but the right choice for logos, screenshots, and graphics with sharp edges.
WebP — A modern format developed by Google that supports both lossy and lossless compression, as well as transparency. WebP files are typically 25–35% smaller than JPEG at equivalent quality. Supported by all major browsers since 2020.
BMP — An uncompressed bitmap format. BMP files are significantly larger than other formats since no compression is applied. Useful for compatibility with older Windows software that requires uncompressed image data.
GIF — A lossless format limited to 256 colors per frame. Best suited for simple graphics and illustrations with flat areas of color. Note that converting a static image to GIF does not produce animation — GIF animation requires multiple source frames.
How to Convert an Image
- Upload your image. Drag and drop a file onto the upload area, or click to browse. JPEG, PNG, WebP, BMP, and GIF files are all accepted.
- Choose an output format. The tool automatically suggests a useful target format based on your source — for example, suggesting WebP when you upload a JPEG, since WebP is typically smaller at equivalent quality.
- Adjust quality if needed. For lossy output formats (JPEG and WebP), use the quality slider to control the trade-off between file size and visual fidelity. Quality 85–90 is generally indistinguishable from the original. PNG, BMP, and GIF do not use a quality setting.
- Convert and download. Click Convert, preview the result and the before/after file size comparison, then download.
Choosing the Right Format
The right output format depends on what you are converting and how the image will be used.
For photographs and complex images, JPEG or WebP are the best choices. JPEG is universally supported; WebP is smaller but requires a modern browser or app. Avoid PNG for photographs — the file sizes are much larger with no visible quality benefit.
For images with transparency, use PNG or WebP. JPEG and BMP do not support alpha channels. If you convert a transparent image to JPEG, the transparent areas become white.
For logos, icons, and flat graphics, PNG preserves sharp edges without compression artifacts. WebP also works well for this use case while producing smaller files.
For maximum compatibility, JPEG and PNG are safe choices — they are supported everywhere. WebP is widely supported in modern contexts but may not work in older software, email clients, or some print workflows.
Quality and File Size
For JPEG and WebP conversions, the quality slider controls lossy compression. At quality 100, the output is as close to the original as the format allows. At lower quality settings, more data is discarded to produce smaller files. The visual difference between quality 80 and quality 100 is typically imperceptible at normal viewing sizes — a quality setting of 85 is a reliable default for most uses.
PNG, BMP, and GIF conversions are lossless — the quality slider is hidden for these formats since quality is always fully preserved.
Privacy
All conversion happens in your browser using the HTML5 Canvas API. Your images are never uploaded to any server, stored, or transmitted. Everything stays on your device.
